Downtown Montevideo, Uruguay
Photo taken on December 30, 2011
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay; it has a population of roughly 1.3 million or about half of the country's total population. At latitude 34.8°S, it is situated a little bit south of Buenos Aires, Argentina (lat 34.6°S) and Santiago, Chile (lat 33.4°S) making it the southernmost capital city in Latin America, and third in the world (after Canberra, Australia – lat 35.3°S and Auckland, New Zealand – lat 36.8°S). Montevideo has the enviable position to be first in Latin America in terms of quality of life, according to Mercers Quality of life survey. This shot was taken along another stretch of the waterfront roadway called Armenia Boulevard, close to the Montevideo Yacht Club and marina. The view is quite typical of the city's skyline with modern office towers mushrooming amongst older apartment buildings.
